An Open Letter to Dr. Daphne Denham

Dear Dr. Denham,

There are moments in life when “thank you” feels far too small for what someone has done. This is one of those moments.

You didn’t just treat my daughter.
You saved her life.

When everyone else said her seizures were psychological… when the narrative felt easier than the investigation… when doors quietly closed and shoulders shrugged… you listened.

You looked at a child who had been hit and then began seizing every few minutes. A child who could barely walk herself to the bathroom. A child who couldn’t read. A child who went from vibrant and thriving to trapped in her own body.

And you said, "This is not in her head."

You fought when others dismissed.
You researched when others doubted.
You leaned in when others stepped back.

Because of you, five months later, I watched my daughter walk back into school. I watched her thrive. I watched her read again. Laugh again. Live again.

That kind of transformation is not common. It is not easy. And it is not achieved by someone who is halfway committed. It is achieved by someone who leads.

Your leadership in concussion research is not just academic — it is lifesaving. It matters not only to families like ours but to athletes across the globe. Professional players. Young competitors. Boys like my son, who now have the chance to avoid a lifetime of CTE because someone like you is willing to challenge the status quo.

You are fighting for futures most people cannot yet see.

When so many naysayers question the work, you continue. When research is hard and controversial, you continue. When families are scared, exhausted, and desperate for someone to believe them, you continue.

To our family, you have been nothing short of a gift from God.

You restored hope when we were running out of it.
You restored our daughter when the world had reduced her to a diagnosis that made no sense.
You restored trust in medicine when we were losing it.

I pray your research is shared across the globe. I pray professional athletes, pediatricians, neurologists, and parents everywhere hear your message. I pray the world catches up to what you already know.

Because what you are doing is remarkable.

And our family is living proof of it.

With profound gratitude,

Tara Emerson
